Convicted PiS Officials Released From Prison As Presidential Pardon Takes Effect

POLAND
  • President Andrzej Duda pardoned two convicted Law and Justice (PiS) officials hours after Public Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar submitted the necessary documents to the Presidential Palace, allowing for an early completion of the procedure. Both officials have been released from prison and have been invited to meet with the President later today. The lack of obstruction from the government and Duda's decision to issue a second pardon moderate tensions in the short term, as the legality of the move is not contested this time around. However, both Duda and PiS still claim that the two officials should be reinstated as lawmakers and will likely continue to push this narrative in the coming months. Note that the Duda's attempt to pardon Mariusz Kaminski and Maciej Wasik in 2015 before their verdicts took effect (i.e. before they were formally deemed guilty) was one of his first decisions after assuming presidency but was widely seen as ineffective.
  • Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz suggested that the government will soon propose constitutional amendments to "repair" the judicial system, as the reforms introduced by the previous administration continue to generate legal chaos. Constitutional amendments can only be passed with the approval of 2/3 of lower house members. DGP sources said that the proposals are currently being discussed by ruling coalition leaders but are rather "vague" at this stage.
  • The Left's Wlodzimierz Czarzasty said that the decision on whether his party will contest the upcoming local elections jointly with Donald Tusk's Civic Coalition will be made before February 12. The Third Way signalled that it will not join the potential electoral alliance.
  • Poland's December unemployment rate will be out at 09:00GMT/10:00CET. Money supply data will follow at 13:00GMT/14:00CET.
