Court Law Taken Off Parliament's Agenda After President's Comments

POLAND

Ruling Law and Justice party spokesman Rafal Bochenek confirms that the new court law agreed with the European Commission will be taken off parliamentary agenda and discussed at a later time after President Andrzej Duda called for deeper reflection on the draft bill.

  • EU Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sek told reporters that presidential advisors will be invited to participate in works on the legislation after Duda noted that he was not involved in talks with Brussels or drafting the court law.
  • The lower house was scheduled to discuss the draft bill in first reading today, with the ruling party seeking to address rule-of-law concerns and meet the European Commission's criteria for unblocking funding for Poland.
  • The postponement of parliamentary works on the bill may result in a delay to the release of suspended recovery funds earmarked for Poland, especially if it proves difficult to come up with a mutually acceptable project in short order.
