TURKEY: Current Account Deficit Narrows Less Than Anticipated in January

  • Turkey's current account deficit narrowed less than expected in January. The shortfall stood at $3.795bln in January compared to a deficit of $4.65bln in December, according to data from the central bank. A narrower deficit of $3.20bln was expected.
  • Commenting on the data, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said on X: “We expect the current account deficit, which we expect to increase in the coming period, to remain at a sustainable level of $28.6 billion throughout the year, below the MTP estimate and 2 percent of national income.”
  • President Recep Tayyip Erdogan meets Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Ankara today. The pair are set to discuss defence and security co-operation, while Tusk is said to want to gauge whether his host would send peacekeepers or provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
