December Inflation Remains Steady At 7.4% YoY

  • This morning, economic data showed that inflation remained steady in December at 7.4%, slightly more than expected (7.2% YoY).
  • HUF is slightly up following the release, currently trading around 309 level.
  • HUF has been one of the best FX movers since the start of the year and the best performing currency among the EM world; the forint is up 5% against the USD and 4% against the Euro.
  • Even though the NBH decided to mark a pause in its tightening cycle, traders have been digesting the upward revision in the CEE CBs terminal rate.
  • Yesterday, Marton Nagy, economic adviser to PM Orban, mentioned in an interview that Hungary price caps on fuel and some basic food staples could reduce CPI by up to 2.5 ppts.
  • Inflation is likely to average 5% in 2022 as inflationary pressures are expected to remain elevated longer than previously anticipated amid surging energy prices.
