Wires carrying comments from Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov states that, 'preparations for a counteroffensive are being wrapped up, broadly speaking we are ready....As soon as there is God's will, the weather, and a decision by commanders, we will do it." With the matter of a Ukrainian spring counteroffensive a matter of when and not if, Russian troops have made significant fortifications along the frontlines in the Donbas and notably in the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, as well as Crimea (see map below).
- The so-called Discord leaks of US military intelligence showed Pentagon concerns about the sustainability of a Ukrainian counteroffensive, stating that “enduring Ukrainian deficiencies in training and munitions supplies probably will strain progress and exacerbate casualties during the offensive”.
- With a broad frontal offensive seen as unlikely, the new supplies of Western tanks could allow Ukrainian troops to launch targeted assaults in both the south towards Crimea and in the east around the heavily fought-over towns of Bakhmut, Vuhledar and Avdiivka.
