Defence Min Insists No Weapons Were Loaded Onto Lady R

  • Defence Minister Thandi Modise reiterated her claim that "nothing was loaded onto the [sanctioned Russian cargo ship] Lady R" when she was replying to a written question from her shadow counterpart Kobus Marais. According to Modise, "Lady R was delivering equipment that was ordered by SANDF pre-Covid in 2018-19." Separately, the government confirmed that the investigation by the so-called Mojapelo panel "remains on schedule" and its members have started writing up their report.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa leads the South African delegation to the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg, which comes after Moscow withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Food security is set to feature prominently in the discussions.
  • South Africa's June PPI figures will be published at 10:30BST/11:30SAST. Consensus looks for a decline to +5.8% Y/Y from +7.3%.
