Defence Ministers Hold Meeting 30-31 Aug To End Summer Break

EU

EU defence ministers will meet in the Spanish city of Toledo on 30-31 August in the first European Council ministerial-level meeting after the bloc's lengthy summer break. The two day meeting will be held in different formats, with the first day being an 'informal meeting' involving larger teams of advisers and assistants alongside the ministers. The second day on 31 August will be in the 'Gymnich' format, where defence ministers are unaccompanied for their meetings. This is seen as allowing a more candid and frank format of discussions between defence ministers of EU member states.

  • Post-meeting pressers take place 1500CET (0900ET, 1400BST) on 30 Aug and 1730CET (1130ET, 1630BST) on 31 Aug.
  • The situation in Ukraine amid the ongoing counteroffensive by Kyiv against Russian forces and Ukraine’s Peace Formula and global diplomatic outreach during the upcoming UN General Assembly set to be the main topic of discussion. The security outlook for Niger and the wider Sahel region following the military coup against President Mohamed Bazoum also set to be discussed.
  • Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleskeii Reznikov will be in attendance at the 30 Aug meeting, while Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba will take part in the 31 Aug Gymnich discussions.
