Democrat Leader Jeffries Says He Will Support Debt Limit Bill

US

Reuters reporting that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has publicly stated that he will support legislation to raise the federal debt limit ahead of today's House vote.

  • Manu Raju at CNN reported a short time ago: "In closed meeting with WH officials this morning, Hakeem Jeffries strongly urged the divided Democratic caucus to back the debt ceiling bill, according to a person in the room. Dem votes will be needed to pass the bill."
  • Jeffries' statement de-risks the outside possibility that Democrats would vote against adopting the rule, potentially blocking bill from being sent to the floor for a full House vote.
  • Jeffries (D-NY) said yesterday: “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” when asked if he would provide Democrat votes to adopt the rule.
  • Punchbowl News wrote this morning: “Typically a rule vote is carried by the majority party, and the majority party alone — it’s almost a core principle on Capitol Hill. But in this instance, that might be tricky. With only a five-vote GOP margin, conservatives can easily bring the rule down.”
  • A final vote is expected to take place around 20:15 ET 01:15 BST.
