Democrats Appear Unlikely To Support Speaker McCarthy

US

Leigh Ann Caldwell at the Washington Post has reports that, "Democrats will NOT vote present and will NOT vote to table. Sources say the caucus is unified. McCarthy’s actions on Jan 6, his trip to Mar a Lago, his attempt to discredit the Jan 6 Cmte, his reneging on debt limit deal and his actions this weekend are all the reasons."

  • Caldwell's report from Congress supports several others from Congressional reporters suggesting that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has directed his caucus to refrain from intervening in the Republican conflict on behalf of McCarthy.
  • The New Democrat Coalition, the largest Democrat bloc in the House, released a statement a short time ago stating: "Speaker McCarthy has proven that he is not a man of his word. He is simply not trustworthy."
  • Without Democrat support to "table" the resolution, a full House vote on the motion to vacate the chair and remove McCarthy from office will go ahead at around 13:00 ET 18:00 BST.
  • McCarthy can stand to lose around five votes if all members vote.
