Deputy President Mabuza Quits Ahead Of Busy Political Week

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Deputy President David Mabuza publicly confirmed his resignation, paving the way for Paul Mashatile to take over, following the latter's election to the position of the ruling ANC party's deputy leader. As per an ANC tradition, party roles typically overlap with government roles. Mashatile still needs to be sworn in as an MP, which is expected to happen today, with three more ANC executives also set to enter the legislature as a result of the recent party elections. President Ramaphosa will then be able to reshuffle his Cabinet, which according to local media outlets will likely happen before Thursday's State of the Nation Address.
  • President Ramaphosa's 7th SONA will be closely watched, with the authorities scrambling to find solutions to the ongoing energy crisis. Speculation is rife that Ramaphosa could declare a national state of disaster, after the ANC proposed the idea at the recent meeting of its top executive body. This would allow officials to cut red tape and facilitate spending on investment in South Africa's electricity generation capacity.
  • Business Unity South Africa, the country's largest business group, called on Ramaphosa to take the opportunity provided by the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle to improve the performance of his administration. The group listed six ministries that it thinks deserve "special attention," including the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, and called on Ramaphosa to cut the size of his Cabinet.
