US-CHINA

Speaking to the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations (livestream: https://www.foreign.senate.gov/hearings/evaluating...) Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman states that the incident around the Chinese 'spy' balloon shot down over the US "is another sign of China's efforts to reshape the international order."

  • On Taiwan Sherman says that "the US remains committed to long-standing one-China policy and opposes any changes to the status quo." Adds that "US policy has not changed, what has changed is Beijing's growing coercion. The US will keep assisting Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self-defence capacity."
  • Sherman: "The US will continue to prevent China's exploitation of US technology to enable its own military modernization."
  • Sherman states that US diplomats in every country need to be able to deal with Chinese acticities, saying "Every mission around the world needs a bespoke China strategy."
