Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has maintained his post-Midterm favourite status to take the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
- According to betting exchange Smarkets, DeSantis has an implied probability of 50% of taking the GOP nomination. Former President Donald Trump is the second favourite with an implied probability of 28% of winning.
- DeSantis is expected to announce his presidential bid in mid-2023 but he hasn’t yet faced significant scrutiny on his aptitude for the job and it would be hasty to conclude that Trump isn’t the frontrunner at this stage.
- Trump retains sizeable support amongst grassroots Republicans and is a proven performer on the primary stage. Questions remain over whether DeSantis has the charisma or public nous to best Trump in a gruelling nationwide campaign.
