DeSantis Picks Up Key Iowa Endorsement

US

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has picked up the endorsement of influential Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats. DeSantis wrote on social media: “[Vander Plaats'] support tells Iowans they can trust me to fight and win for them.”

  • The endorsement, in the state which will provide the first results in the GOP presidential race, may relieve some pressure on DeSantis, who has recently been overtaken in polls by former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) as the best-of-the-rest GOP presidential candidate, behind former President Donald Trump. His slump has also prompted a collapse in his donor base with major GOP money poised to move towards Haley.
  • CNN writes that Vander Plaats, “has clashed with former President Donald Trump and urged Republicans to move on from the former president while heaping praise on DeSantis."
  • Politico notes that, “Vander Plaats has endorsed the last three Republicans who won contested Iowa caucuses — Mike Huckabee in 2008, Rick Santorum in 2012 and Ted Cruz in 2016 — though none of them went on to win the nomination.”
  • Betting markets see little in the endorsement to change the equation of Republican presidential race. According to data from Smarkets, DeSantis remains in third place with a 4.3% implied probability of winning the nomination. Haley in second with 10.8%. Trump with a commanding lead of 80.6%.
