Diplomatic Expulsions Increase Following Reports Of Russian War Crimes

RUSSIA

Since reports of Russian atrocities in occupied Ukrainian territory there has been a string of expulsions of Russian diplomatic staff from EU and NATO states.

  • Presented below is a complete list of diplomatic expulsions by country and date, as compiled by Shashank Joshi Defence editor of the Economist and correct as of 12:30 ET 17:30 BST.
  • There have now been more than 400 Russian diplomatic expulsions. European states have claimed that Russian diplomatic staff were operating as undeclared intelligence officers as justification for expulsions.
  • Deteriorating diplomatic channels could significantly undermine the potential for a political solution to the war in Ukraine. Yesterday, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said that he believes the war could stretch on for years. NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg made similar comments in doorstep remarks at the NATO ministerial today.
