DOE Deny Lake Charles LNG Second Timeline Extension

LNG

The US DOE has denied the request from Lake Charles LNG for a second extension of its deadline to start exports from its planned Louisiana export terminal. They said the project had not achieved the level of commercial progress seen by other authorisation holders. The extension would have pushed a current deadline of 16 Dec 2025 out to December 2028.

  • The regulator also introduced a new policy for extending deadlines for commencement of US LNG exports to non-free trade agreement nations. They consider the seven year time frame for projects to start exports to be "reasonable" and "achievable."
  • DOE will no longer consider applications for extensions unless an applicant can show it has physically begun construction and has faced "extenuating circumstances" beyond its control.
  • DOE agreed to extend the export time frame for the Port Arthur LNG project by 25 months to 18 June 2028 after the 20 March 2023 final investment decision and start of construction on the Port Arthur Phase 1 project.
