DOE Will Not Rehear Second Extension Request for Lake Charles LNG

LNG

The US DOE will not rehear the request from Energy Transfer for a second extension of its Lake Charles LNG export project. Energy Transfer said it has spent $350m on the project but the decision could risk an end to the project according to the company filings with the DOE.

  • The three-year extension was needed due to unplanned delays and "severe shortages" of equipment needed for the build according to Energy Transfer earlier this year.
  • The company also looked to include a major carbon capture and sequestration component although new DOE and FERC authorization would be required.
  • Energy Transfer has agreed 7.9m tons of LNG offtake deals equating to almost 50% of the proposed plant's output.
