Dragged Anchor Likely Cause for Balticconnector Damage

The latest investigations by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation showed that the damage to the Balticconnector pipeline was likely the result of an errant anchor dropped from the Hong Kong registered shipping vessel, the Newnew Polar bear, cited by Bloomberg.

  • The vessel is assumed to have dropped an anchor into the Baltic Sea and dragged it along the seafloor, damaging the pipeline. Investigations will also look into premeditation.
  • The Balticconnector gas pipeline linking Estonia and Finland was taken offline on 8 October and is scheduled to return operational in April the earliest.
  • The pipeline has the capacity to carry 7.2mcm/day but has been flowing at around 3mcm/day.
