Durban Shipping Back in Business

  • Durban’s port and other key infrastructure in KwaZulu-Natal are now fully functioning after the severe impact prompted by record flooding last week. While officials have confirmed that regular shipping patterns have returned, Moneyweb reports that a landslide has reduced entry to the port by truck, while trains are still unable to reach the port. There remains a backlog of over 8,000 containers that are due to be formally imported into South Africa.
  • Ramaphosa held another round of bilateral talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky, and offered to mediate talks between Ukraine and Russia. The reports follow criticism of the South African government as being too soft on Russia previously.
  • Reported late yesterday, South Africa’s COVID-19 test positivity rate hit the highest level in three months, with the rate climbing for four consecutive days. Scientists had previously predicted a fresh wave of COVID cases across April and May, but a high vaccine rate of 80% should keep hospital admissions and fatalities relatively low.
