Dutch Deputy PM Hoekstra To Replace Timmermans In Climate Role

EU COMMISSION

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed that Dutch Second Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra will be proposed to the European Parliament and Council for the position of Commissioner for Climate Action. Hoekstra is set to fill the vacated seat of the commissioner from the Netherlands left by First Vice-President of the Commissioner Frans Timmermans, who stepped down in order to run in the upcoming Dutch general election in November.

  • Hoekstra led the centre-right Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) from 2020 to 2023, serving as Minister of Finance and Foreign Minister under outgoing PM Mark Rutte.
  • VdL: "[Hoekstra] will be in charge of climate action, under the guidance of the Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight [Maros Sefcovic].[...] His governmental experience will be a strong asset in particular for Europe's climate diplomacy in the run-up to COP28 and for climate finance, as well as for the implementation of climate-related legislative instruments."
  • Hoekstra is seen as something of an unexpected choice, with even some members of his CDA raising that under his leadership the party failed to regain ground lost to parties on the right such as Rutte's VVD.
