East Coast Air Traffic Halted Following Earthquake In New Jersey

Several East Coast airports have temporarily grounded air traffic following a 4.8 magnitude earthquake at 10:23 ET 15:23 BST. The epicenter of the quake in Lebanon, New Jersey is roughly 50 miles west of Manhattan.

  • The New York Times notes that shaking was reportedly felt in cities from Philadelphia to Boston but New York Police Department said it had no immediate reports of damage.
  • The quakes appears to be the strongest to hit the area since a 5.8 magnitude quake in Mineral, Virginia 2011 which caused around USD$250 million in damage and led to the evacuation of some office buildings in Manhattan.
  • New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement on X: "A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day."
  • Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement: “While we do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, we’re still assessing the impact.”
