EMISSIONS: EC to Propose New 2040 Climate Target in 1Q 2025

EMISSIONS

The EC plans to propose a 90% emissions reduction targets vs 1990 levels by 2040 this quarter according to work programme published on Wednesday.

  • The EU currently plans to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and aims for carbon neutrality by 2050.
  • The 2040 climate target will also be used to set a 2035 goal as part of a national contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement.
  • WWF warns that the EC’s proposed 90% emissions reduction by 2040 lacks the ambition needed to fairly align with the 1.5C goal, with weaker interim targets for 2030 and insufficient action in key sectors—energy, industry, transport, agriculture, and land use.
