Econ & Trade Dialogue On 25 Sept Following Earlier Digital Talks

(MNI) London - Wires reporting comments from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, which has stated that China will co-host a China-EU high-level economic and trade dialogue in Beijing on 25 September.

  • This dialogue comes shortly after the EU-China High-level Digital Dialoguethat took place on 18 September in Beijing involving China's Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing and the European Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova.
  • The digital dialogue was the first of its nature in three years, and comes as Politico reports that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's efforts to 'de-risk' from China will not see any notable progress during the current mandate (running to Dec 2024).
  • Politico states that, “It’s not going to see the light of day during this mandate,” one senior official told Playbook. That assessment was echoed by other senior officials and diplomats.[...] France and Germany, in particular, have pulled the emergency brake on the plan, warning the Commission is encroaching on their national competences."
