Ecuador Electoral Authorities Approve Zurita Candidacy

  • Ecuador’s electoral authorities approved the presidential candidacy of Christian Zurita late Wednesday in replacement of Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate assassinated one week earlier. This makes Zurita officially a candidate for the Aug. 20 election.
    • This follows reports yesterday that the left-wing party, seen as front runner in the election, had filed a last-minute objection seeking to block a rival from registering a replacement.
  • Separately, Ecuador had its credit score slashed Wednesday by Fitch Ratings, which cited heightened financing risks for the Latin American nation rocked last week by the assassination of a candidate for president. Fitch lowered its rating by one step to CCC+, seven notches below investment grade.
