LATAM: Ecuador Judge Blocks Bid To Remove Vice President Abad

LATAM
  • Ecuador’s Vice President Abad has said she will reoccupy her office after a judge blocked a bid promoted by President Noboa to remove her, according to Bloomberg. Judge Nubia Vera blocked a labour ministry order yesterday that had suspending Abad for 150 days days on the allegation that she’d been late to report to an overseas posting as ordered by the President.
  • Speaking afterwards, Judge Vera said that she had received a threat to remove her if she ruled for Abad. She said that the president of the judicial administration and other officials had threatened to fire her and handed her with a ruling against Abad.
  • Following the judge’s decision, President Noboa reinstated Abad, but ordered her to take up a temporary post as economic envoy to Turkey, saying that he had made a mistake in picking her as his running mate and that she should have resigned when she opposed his policies. Presidential and legislative elections are due on Feb 9 next year.
