EdF Disconnects 3GW of Nuclear Amid High Wind Output, Low Demand

French utility EdF is anticipated to disconnect about 3GW of nuclear capacity over 15- 16 June amid high wind output and low demand anticipated over the period, which pushed day-ahead power prices into negative territory.

  • The utility will disconnect its 1.33GW St Alban 2 and 905MW Chinon 3 nuclear units over 15-16 June, while its 910MW Gravelines 6 nuclear plant will be lowered to just 182MW on 15 June for a few hours, latest Remit data show.
  • German wind output is expected at 20.98GW, or 32% load factor on 15 June, while French wind output is expected at 10.75GW, or 52% load factor on the same day.
  • Negative prices were seen for 9 delivery hours between €-2.36 and €-80.02/MWh in France. The highest negative price was seen for delivery in hour 14-15.
  • Negative power prices for some delivery hours were also present in Germany, with negative prices reaching as high as €-80.01/MWh also for hour 14-15.
  • German power demand is forecast to be between 34.37-51.27GW over 15-16 June, down from 41.34-63.11GW on Friday, data from Entso-E show.
  • And French power demand is forecast to be between 31-45.1GW over the weekend, down from 34.5-49.45GW on Friday
