EMISSIONS: Edinburgh At Risk Of Missing Net-Zero Target by 2030
EMISSIONS
Edinburgh is at risk of missing its ambitious 2030 net-zero target as its plan to swap gas boilers for heat pumps and petrol cars for electric vehicles is not executed fast enough, according to The Times.
- Gas boilers are Edinburgh’s largest source of emissions, accounting for 40% of the city’s emissions.
- The council identified 117,317 homes are suitable for a heat pump, but only 1,252, or 1.07%, homes have installed a heat pump, with only 210 installations in 2024.
- Another warning sign is that the swap of petrol cars for electric vehicles is not fast enough, with only EV’s accounting for only 4% of all registered cars.
- “For all that we’ve achieved, there is still far to go. We’re not yet recording change at the pace required and there are so many factors beyond our control,” Jane Meagher, the leader of the council, said.
