Egypt Boosts Domestic Fuel-Oil Burn To Raise European Gas Exports

Egypt has been boosting domestic fuel-oil generation, in an attempt to export more gas to Europe, a whistleblower from the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy told Climate Home news.

  • “The use of mazut currently in stations instead of natural gas is in complete contradiction with the climate conference”, said the whistleblower.
  • In October, Egyptian mazut consumption of power plants stood at around 21%, compared with 3.7% in October 2021, according to the Egyptian Electricity and Consumer Protection Agency.
  • In June, Egypt signed a deal with the EU and Israel to boost LNG sales to Europe.
  • Egypt expects to export 15% of its gas production, prime minister Moustaga Madbouly said in August.
