Election Commission Sets Tentative Election Timeline

THAILAND

The Thai Election Commission has tentatively set May 7, 2023 as the date for the next general election, the Bangkok Post and Thansettakij reported. The date has been set under the assumption that the House of Representatives completes its current term on March 23.

  • The date cannot be formally announced until March 31, but there is a risk that parliament will be dissolved before the end of its term. In that case, the Election Commission will set the election data 34-65 days after the dissolution.
  • A recent poll showed that more than 60% of Thai voters would like the government to call a snap election as the Constitutional Court considers a case on Prime Minister Prayuth's term limit, with the head of government suspended until the final verdict expected on September 30.
