Election Commission To Ask For Dissolution Of Move Forward Party

THAILAND

Thailand's Election Commission (EC) said in a statement that it would ask the Constitutional Court to disband the main opposition Move Forward Party (MFP), which won most seats in last year's parliamentary election but ultimately failed to form government.

  • Multiple media outlets report that the EC's decision to press ahead with the procedure was unanimous and follows from the court's January 31 verdict, which deemed the party's calls to amend the lese-majeste law as an attempt to overthrow the monarchy.
  • A dissolution of the Move Forward Party would entail a 10-year ban for its executive officials from running in elections. This would not be unprecedented, as the MFP's predecessor Future Forward Party (FFP) and its leaders met a similar fate.
  • Piling legal challenges and opposition from the military-controlled Senate prevented the MFP from taking power last year, which led to the formation of a coalition by former political rivals Pheu Thai Party (PTP) and military-royalist parties.
