Election On A Knife-Edge As Centre-Right Bloc Retains Slim Advantage

SWEDEN

The Swedish general election remains too close to call, with the main opposition centre-right bloc of parties holding the slenderest of leads over the centre-left grouping of parties supportive of PM Magdalena Andersson's Social Democrats. Partial results show the centre-right bloc with 175 seats to the centre-left's 174 seats.

  • Full results are not expected until Wednesday when all postal ballots and votes from Swedish citizens living abroad have been counted. Given the extremely close nature of the vote, these ballots could have a major impact on the balance of power after the vote.
  • In any eventuality (the centre-left or centre-right winning a majority) there is likely to be a lengthy period of negotiation between political parties meaning a new gov't might not be in place for weeks or months. PM Andersson's gov't remains in place as a caretaker until a new administration is formed.
  • Major questions over whether right-wing nationalist Sweden Democrats will form part of the next gov't, would be landmark moment for Swedish politics.
