Electoral Court Rejects Bid To Deregister MK Party

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa's Electoral Court (EC) rejected a petition filed by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to remove ex-President Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) from the ballots ahead of the May 29 elections.

  • The ANC wanted the EC to annul the registration of the MK Party, accusing it of appropriating the logo of its disbanded military wing. ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula argued that the MK Party "took our asset and decided to run with it."
  • The ANC will hold a media briefing later today to comment on the Electoral Court's decision. They earlier flagged plans to file more petitions against the MK Party.
