Electricity Min Sees Solid Loadshedding Buffer Into Winter, S. Africa Observes Holiday

  • A cross-partisan bill calling on the US government to conduct a comprehensive review of bilateral relations with South Africa was passed by the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, clearing the first hurdle in the legislative process. If adopted, the bill would require the administration to report to Congress "explicitly stating whether South Africa has engaged in activities that undermine United States national security or foreign policy interests." On the other hand, an amendment to end all foreign aid to South Africa was defeated in the committee.
  • Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that South Africa has built a solid buffer against loadshedding ahead of the winter season, with planned maintenance expected to taper off at the end of March. The official told parliament that Eskom won't reach the 65% energy availability factor (EAF) by the end of this month, as increased maintenance caused a temporary setback on that front, but the EAF is expected to reach 75% within a year.
  • South African markets are shut for the Human Rights Day.
