Electricity Minister Strikes Optimistic Notes On Short-Term Energy Outlook

  • Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa Eskom has managed to reduce the number of generation units that break down through their more frequent maintenance. Loadshedding remains suspended this week, which represents some reprieve after Eskom was forced to escalate power cuts to Stage 6 twice last month. Ramokgopa said that he was optimistic about the loadshedding outlook for the next two weeks and the lights should stay on during the festive season.
  • Energy analyst Chris Yelland told Newzroom Afrika that Eskom's deal with Karpowership is far from done and may not be completed by the deadline, as this would require any outstanding legal challenges to be dismissed. However, the prospect of another extension of the deadline remains on the table.
