Elysee Denies DT Claims France Will Pass UN Security Council Seat To EU

The Elysee Palace has issued a blunt rebuttal to the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper, which claimed in a story on Tuesday evening that the French gov't was contemplating passing on its permanent seat on the UN Security Council to the European Union.

  • Elysee Palace tweet (translated from French): "Contrary to the claims of the English tabloid Daily Telegraph relayed this morning, no, France has not proposed to leave its seat on the United Nations Security Council. It is France and will remain so."
  • The Telegraph claimed that President Emmanuel Macron was contemplating the handover in exchange for EU member states backing an 'EU army', a force that has been talked about for years.
  • Some have seen the breakdown of relations between France (and the EU institutions) and the United States and Australia (relations with the UK were already in a poor state) following Australia's cancellation of a EUR50bn submarine deal as a signal that the EU must pursue its own 'strategic autonomy' in security policy.
