EMISSIONS: Emissions-Free Trucks Price Uncompetitive With Diesel

EMISSIONS

Prices for emissions-free trucks would need to fall by 50% to be an affordable alternative to diesel models, a study from McKinsey showed, cited by Reuters.

  • The study claims this is a necessary step to reach EU climate targets.
  • Less than 2% of the EU's heavy freight vehicles are currently electric and hydrogen-powered.
  • Production costs for electric trucks are currently 2.5-3 times higher than for diesel alternatives.
  • While the cut in production costs is important to reach the EU’s climate target, charging costs also need to be reduced by 25%.
  • "I don't think it's impossible that this could actually happen in electric trucks over time," said Anna Herlt, head of commercial vehicle consulting at McKinsey.
