EMISSIONS: Germany’s Auto Industry Calls For Stricter Climate Targets for Fuels

EMISSIONS

Germany’s auto association calls for even stricter climate targets on fuels than the EU’s RED III in order to become climate neutral in the road traffic sector by 2045, VDA said, cited by Reuters.

  • "Politicians are called upon to establish incentives for the ramp-up of renewable energy sources and thus to guarantee and promote investment," VDA President Hildegard Mueller said.
  • VDA is hoping for more ambitious targets for fuels to support the boost for carbon neutral fuels such as biofuels and e-fuels.
  • Under RED III, the bloc demands a share of minimum 29% of renewables by 2030 or a 14.5% decline in GHG compared with emissions from fossil-fuel use.
  • The VDA calls for a 35% GHG reduction rate compared with fossil-fuel use, despite Germany already deciding for a higher rate of 25%.
  • The EU regulation also stipulates a quota for biofuels and synthetic fuels of 5.5%, with a 1% minimum synthetic fuel share – which VDA said should be at least 5%.
