End of Winter US Natural Gas Storage Set for Highest Since 2016

US natural gas storage is set to end the the winter withdrawal season at the highest since 2016 at around 2.3 tcf on March 31, according to recent analyst estimates from Reuters.

  • Gas in storage ended last winter at 1.850 tcf while the five-year (2019-2023) average is 1.653 tcf.
  • Storage at the end of the April-October summer injection season is projected to reach a new record of 4.078 tcf on Oct. 31.
  • End of summer storage was around 3.809 tcf in 2023 and the current record high is 4.013 tcf from October 2016.
  • The Lower 48 states had 387 active storage fields with a design capacity of 4.678 tcf in November 2021, according to the latest available federal data.
