Energy Transfer Seek Rehearing for Lake Charles LNG Extension

LNG

Pipeline operator Energy Transfer is seeking a rehearing after the US DOE denied the request for a three-year extension of its Lake Charles LNG project.

  • The company said the decision caused one potential customer to suspend contract talks.
  • "Lake Charles LNG is the most advanced LNG project in the United States that has not taken FID and we believe it satisfies the criteria for an extension," said spokesperson Vicki Granado.
  • The three-year extension was needed due to unplanned delays and "severe shortages" of equipment needed for the build according to Energy Transfer.
  • The company could make a formal investment decision by the end of this year if the extension is granted. They have already secured 7.9m tons of LNG offtake deals for almost 50% of the proposed output.
  • The regulator has introduced a new policy for extending deadlines for commencement of US LNG exports with the seven year time frame for projects to start exports considered to be "reasonable" and "achievable."
