Eni to Convert Livorno Refinery Into Bio-Refinery

REFINING

Eni is planning to convert its Livorno refinery into a bio-refinery by 2026 amid growing demand for biofuels, the firm said in statement, cited by Bloomberg.

  • The conversion into a bio-fuels refinery – meaning converting biomass instead of crude oil into energy and other byproducts - includes the construction of three new facilities for the production of hydrogenated biofuels, once authorised by the government.
  • The plants will process various biogenic feedstock, mainly vegetable waste and residue, to produce HVO diesel, HVO naphtha and bio-LPG.
  • Eni’s COO said last spring that margins on biodiesel are higher than regular diesel and Italy’s HVO market is growing while overall demand for biofuels is expected to rise in the next years.
  • Eni stopped importing crude oil and started the shutdown of the lubricants production lines and topping plant, the statement said.
