Equities Roundup: Financials, Health Care Sectors Outperform

  • Inching off mid morning lows, Financials and Health Care sectors helped indexes post modest gains ahead midday. At the moment: DJIA is up 261.62 points (0.7%) at 37691.7, S&P E-Mini futures up 18.5 points (0.39%) at 4764.75, Nasdaq up 34 points (0.2%) at 14624.08.
  • Leading gainers: Financial and Health Care sectors led gainers in the first half, banks buoyed the former: Wells Fargo +2.14%, Zions Bancorp +1.81%, Truist Financial +1.8%. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical and biotech shares supported the Health Care sector: insulin infusion systems maker Insulet +2.61%, Revvity +2.1%, Merck +2.0%
  • Laggers: Energy sector shares underperformed as oil and gas refiners reversed midweek gains: APA -7.16%, Marathon Petroleum and EOG Resources both -1.6%. Meanwhile, metals and mining shares weighed on the Materials sector: Nucor and Freeport-McMoRan bouth -0.25%
  • Reminder, the next quarterly earnings cycle starts in earnest next week Friday with UnitedHealth, BlackRock, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, Citigroup and Bank of NY Mellon.
