Equities Roundup: Real Estate, Utilities Outperform

  • Stocks holding near session highs, Real Estate sector outperforming early in the second half after this morning's soft October jobs data kicked the rally off. Currently, DJIA is up 282.81 points (0.84%) at 34121.71, S&P E-Mini futures up 50.25 points (1.16%) at 4385.75, Nasdaq up 190.3 points (1.4%) at 13482.99.
  • The week's rally in Eminis has cleared the 20-day EMA, at 4281.95 and 50-day EMA at 4354.59 to 4387.25 high.
  • Leaders: Real Estate shares lead gainers for the second consecutive session, followed by Utilities and Materials stocks. Real Estate management shares buoyed the former: CBRE Group +6.53%, CoStar Group +4.07%.
  • Water and independent power shares supported Utilities: AES +7.03%, American Water Works +5.16%, while Dominion Energy gained 4.43%. Meanwhile, container/packaging shares buoyed the Materials sector: Sealed Air Corp +4.23%, Ball Corp +4% while International Paper gained 2.45%.
  • Laggers: Energy and Consumer Staples sectors lagged the broader based rally: oil and gas shares weighed on the former: Marathon Petroleum -2.7%, Valero -2.15%, Targa Resources -2.07%.
  • Meanwhile, household and personal products shares weighed on staples: Church & Dwight -6.92% despite beating Q3 earnings and revenue estimates, while Estee Lauder slips 1.45% after losing 20% on poor earnings forward guidance this week - share at 6 year low around 112.5.
