Erdogan Links Swedish NATO Accession To Stalled EU Membership Talks

TURKEY

Ahead of a meeting with Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan seems to link Sweden's accession bid to the EU restarting long-stalled talks with Turkey on membership. Erdogan states "First, open the way to Turkey's membership of the European Union, and then we will open it for Sweden, just as we had opened it for Finland,".

  • A number of EU member states are seen to have strong objections to Turkish membership, whether related to perceptions of an increasingly authoritarian/Islamist political system, alleged repression of the Kurdish minority, or concerns about mass immigration in the event of Turkish membership.
  • As such, should Erdogan stick to this stance it will all-but-eliminate the prospect of Sweden's accession being agreed to at the upcoming summit, with the EU unlikely to agree to such talks at the current time.
