Erdogan Meets with Top Hamas Official to Discuss Gaza

TURKEY
  • President Erdogan met with Hamas’s political leader on Saturday to discuss the need for a permanent cease-fire and accelerated humanitarian aid in Gaza, Bloomberg report. “It is vital that Palestinians act with unity in this process. The strongest response to Israel and the path to victory lie in unity and integrity,” Erdogan said as per his directorate of communications. Erdogan has called Hamas militants “freedom fighters” and repeatedly criticised Israel’s conduct in the war, but has stopped short of cutting ties with Israel altogether.
  • Meanwhile, Iraq, with water reserves at their lowest in decades, said Turkey will sign two key agreements as well as a number of memorandums of understanding on issues including water sharing when President Erdogan visits Baghdad on Monday, according to Bloomberg. Turkey, on its part, has expressed its readiness to receive oil exports once the Iraq-Turkey pipeline reopens.
  • Data-wise, Turkey's adjusted consumer confidence rose to 80.5 in April from 79.4 in March, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. The CBRT rate decision on Thursday takes focus later in the week, where the central bank is expected to keep its one-week repo rate unchanged at 50% after surprising markets with an above-consensus hike in March.
