Eskom Calls On Users To Conserve Energy Or Face Stage 7 Loadshedding

  • Eskom appealed to members of the public to reduce their electricity consumption, which would "assist in alleviating pressure on the system" and could help "avoid higher stages of loadshedding." The utility said that the cold front sweeping in over some parts of the country has contributed to intensified power cuts, with loadshedding currently running continuously at Stage 6, while the latest comments suggest that South Africa has found itself on the brink of Stage 7.
  • According to the Competition Commission’s Essential Food Pricing Monitoring report, food retailers are struggling to recover rising energy expenditure associated with the crippling power outages, despite falling costs of maize, bread and beef. As a result, falling food producer prices are yet to translate into a drop in prices in supermarkets.
  • The US and South Africa are looking to put their disputes behind. US Consul-General Vincent Spera said that the upcoming AGOA Forum hosted by South Africa will be about "potential and moving forward and building on the strengths of our relationship". The official emphasised that the overall US-SA engagement "is only expanding" and praised their "strategic relationship".
