Eskom Ramps Up Load-Shedding Amid Generation Unit Breakdowns

Eskom tweets that "due to the failure of seven generation units in the last 24 hours, higher stages of loadshedding will be required over the next few days." As a result, the utility will escalate power rationing to Stage 6 this afternoon.

  • Eskom is now looking to move between Stage 4 and Stage 6 until Wednesday morning, when it will return to Stage 3. The previous schedule assumed alternating between Stage 3 and Stage 4 until further notice.
  • This comes as South Africa is trying to formulate a plan to alleviate the ongoing energy crisis. The Electricity Minister presented his plan to the ruling party's top brass over the weekend, but his formal powers are yet to be clearly defined.
