Eskom Reinforced Load-Shedding With Load Curtailment, S. African CPI Due Wednesday

  • Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said in a response to a written parliamentary Q&A from last month that South Africa was able to avoid ramping up load-shedding beyond Stage 6 thanks to load curtailment, according to a report circulated by BusinessTech. Partial reduction of demand from large industrial customers through load curtailment goes up to Stage 4 and sometimes was implemented alongside Stage 6 load-shedding. Stage 4 curtailment entails up to 1,000MW being removed from the grid, which is equivalent to one stage of load-shedding, but is not immediately felt by ordinary South Africans. One should bear this in mind when assessing the intensity of power outages.
  • South Africa's May CPI data will be published tomorrow morning (09:00BST/10:00SAST), providing a key data signal for the SARB and its watchers. Headline inflation may have eased to +6.4% Y/Y from +6.8%, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg poll. As a reminder, the SARB seeks to bring inflation close to the mid-point of its +3%-6% target range.
