Eskom Says Delay To Return Koeberg Unit 1 Is 45 Days, SARB Officials Due To Speak

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Eskom told parliament yesterday that the current delay to return Unit 1 at the Koeberg nuclear power station online is around 45 days. The unit generates some 920MW, which is equivalent to one stage of load-shedding. The utility's head of generation noted that the delay only had an impact on available electricity, but not on the life extension of Unit 1. Still, its prolonged outage adds pressure to the grid during the difficult winter season.
  • South Africa's law enforcement officials produced mixed testimonies on whether former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter informed them about suspected corruption. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola backed de Ruyter's claims, but Hawks' head Godfrey Lebeya disagreed, noting that Eskom's former boss is a criminal suspect for failing to report corrupt activities at the utility to the authorities.
  • SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago will speak at the University of Johannesburg on "Challenges Facing the Global Economy: a South African Perspective" at 10:00BST/11:00SAST. Separately, Deputy Governor Rashad Cassim appears at a CFA Society South Africa and Ninety One event.
