EU Ban on LNG Transhipments Could Weigh on Yamal LNG Exports

LNG

The reportedly considered EU ban on the transhipment of Russian LNG via European facilities in the 14th round of sanctions would primarily impact shipping operations from the Yamal LNG facility according to Timera Energy.

  • Last year 19.2bcm, or 71%, of Yamal LNG loadings were delivered to a European terminal – including Turkey – with 7.6bcm delivering directly into Asia.
  • Most of the volumes delivered into Europe were transhipped to other destinations.
  • Yamal LNG uses 15 specialised Arc7 ice-class carriers to load LNG with most deliveries being shipped to NW Europe.
  • In the case of a ban of EU transhipment, Russian LNG would face longer journeys for the Arc7 carries, which could prevent the ability to sustain a full loading programme, especially in winter, when the NSR is impassable.
  • The planned measures are currently in debate by EU members after proposals were presented on Friday.
