EU Coal Output Could Almost Be Phased Out by 2028: BNEF

European coal-fired electricity generation could be almost phased out as soon as 2028, with the share of coal output in the European electricity mix falling to 0.5% according to BNEF.

  • The current trajectory sees European coal output could fall to just 18TWh, or 0.5% of the power mix, by 2028 and to below 0.1% by 2030.
  • The decline will be driven by cheap renewables, the introduction of carbon prices and member states’ plans to phase out coal and lignite-fired generation capacity.
  • However, coal-heavy countries in East and Southeast Europe will face more challenges in mobilizing investments for clean generation capacity and grid improvements.
