EU Confident To Agree Gas Price Cap On Monday

EU leaders are making progress in talks on finding a solution on the proposed gas price cap during their meeting in Brussels on Thursday and are likely to reach a compromise on Monday, several head of states said.

  • "I am sure that we will find agreement in some more issues on the sidelines today so that we will eventually reach overall agreement”, and "we are very close" on reaching a deal, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.
  • Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also said he sees energy ministers to reach a compromise on price cap on Monday.
  • The EU may reach an agreement on the price cap on Monday, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said.
  • If the EU introduce a price cap on natural gas, Hungary will likely need to amend a long-term natural-gas contract with Russia’s Gazprom PJSC, Szijjarto said.
  • Gazprom is open to amending the contract with Hungary, he added.
